STC Shoots for the Stars with Celestial Being
January 20, 2017 - January 21, 2017
Start the countdown, STC blasts off into space with Celestial Being, Jan. 20 – 21 at 7:30 PM, continuing a month of family fun at the theatre.
Celestial Being, written by Dave Deveau and directed by STC Students on Stage Director, Meredith Zwicker, follows nine-year olds Celeste and Martin, a pair of terrestrial misfits. Celeste, who is diagnosed with Asperger’s Syndrome, is teased as a “space case” while Martin struggles to adjust after moving from Sudbury to Vancouver. Together they hatch a plan to build a rocket so they can find a home among the stars. A play that fascinates on the grandest scale of scientific discovery will resonate with audiences for its touching portrayal of friendship and belonging. In Zwicker’s words, “At its heart, this story is about finding friendship and understanding…with a lot of fun and adventure along the way!”
Local actors Sidney Cassidy and Camil Rochon star in the production as part of STC’s Young Company program. The Young Company provides professional development to emerging local talents. Rochon says he has learned a great deal working with a small, dedicated team. “It gave us a lot of one-on-one with the director, which is not something you always get the chance to do.” The pair have had a lot of fun playing around in an imaginative set designed by Katherine Smith and Meredith Zwicker, against a stellar soundscape by Michael Doherty.
STC is pleased to be teaming up with Science North in a first-time collaboration for the two organizations. STC will be running a draw for each of its public performances, giving patrons a chance to win two ticketsto see Science North’s renovated planetarium and feature film, Passport to the Universe, narrated by Tom Hanks.
As part of STC’s ongoing efforts to make the arts more accessible in Sudbury, the 2:00 PM matinee scheduled for Jan. 21 will be a pay-what-you-can Relaxed Performance. Relaxed Performances are specifically designed to welcome those who would benefit from a more tranquil environment, such as individuals on the Autism Spectrum, or those with sensory and communication disorders, or learning disabilities. STC will host post-show discussion with members of the cast, production team, and representatives from Autism Ontario.
Celestial Being runs Jan. 20 – 21 at 7:30 PM with a matinee at 2:00 PM on the 21st. General tickets are $20 (+HST) and $12 (+HST) for students. STC is offering a special promocode ROCKET where adults can pay the price of a student ticket.
