Original Charlie Brown Christmas drummer brings holiday jazz tradition to life in Sudbury
December 2, 2016
Just over 50 years ago, the Vince Guaraldi Trio went into a San Francisco studio to record the soundtrack for a scrappy little animated Christmas special featuring the Peanuts gang. Since then, “A Charlie Brown Christmas” has become a popular Christmas tradition and its accompanying soundtrack has become one of the best-selling jazz records of all time.
Drummer Jerry Granelli is the only surviving member of Guaraldi’s trio who recorded the iconic 1965 soundtrack. Today, he continues to honour the music in his live special performances.
Parents and grandparents alike will have the opportunity to introduce jazz to a brand new generation as The Jerry Granelli Trio joins with the Young Sudbury Singers to recreate the magic of this classic album at Tales of A Charlie Brown Christmas on Friday, December 2, 2016, at 7 p.m., in the Fraser Auditorium at Laurentian University.
Part concert, part screening, and part oral history, the show features performances of instantly recognizable tracks such as “Linus and Lucy”, “Skating”, “Christmas Time is Here”, and other seasonal treasures. Enchanting stories will blend with enduringly beautiful music to capture the joy and spirit of the Christmas season, while providing an insider’s perspective on the story behind the production of the historic CBS special.
Tales of A Charlie Brown Christmas is proudly presented by Young Sudbury Singers, in association with Jazz Sudbury. Tickets are now available – $35 for adults ($40 at the door), $20 for students ($25 at the door) and $15 for children 12 and under ($20 at the door).
